Yes. Another blog about Adele. But we have to. Its the only way to get the other stans to stop.
So remeber, back to early 2011 when we began to notice the constant airplay of ''Rolling in the Deep''. If you were a regular radio listener like me, whose ears will filled with Rihanna's Barbadian accent or were just getting used to Lady Gaga's new single "Born This Way'', you must have been like, wha? Real belting? No cuss words? No sudden rap verse halfway through? Its was a shock, a new discovery for us. And we certainly liked that discovery as the song would go on to sell over 14 million digital downloads worldwide.Regular pov. Now 21, as Adele's 2011 album was called, debuted at 1 on the BB200, and began the longest running reign on top of the chart this decade , setting a record of 24 non-consecutive weeks at the summit and 84 weeks in the top ten. It gained 3 consecutive number ones, "Rolling in the Deep","Someone like You" and "Set Fire to the Rain", which all togethor had Adele on the top of the US Hot 100 for 14 weeks. The album topped charts worldwide, breaking records left and right, selling over 11.7 million copies in the US and 31 million worldwide. It went on to win 6 Grammys in 2012(and spend another 11 weeks at number one) winning Record and Song of the Year for "Rolling in the Deep'' and Album of the Year for 21. After scooping nearly every musical award possible, she disappeared.Well, not literally she came back to win more Grammys in 2013 and 2014, but she barely made live appearances. She spent 2013-2015 taking care of her child and preaparing for a little project that will be known as her second slayage.
In October 2015, the Billboard Hot 100 met its match.
Ok, "Uptown Funk" did top for 14 weeks and "See You Again" for 12, but (and this is arguable) none were as powerful as Adele's comeback song:"Hello". And the slayage began, once again.
First, "Hello" destroyed Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" record of most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours, a record she still holds at 27.7 million views. She the debuted at number one, giving her her first single to debut that high and the 24th song to do so, dethroning The Weeknd's "The Hills"(she should have told him, at least he'd now he would lose his spot). It became the first song in the US to sell a million digital copies in a week. It topped many Billboard charts, holding a 21 weeks atop the Adult Contemporary Chart and topped the single charts globally. Yes, it one of those singles. In total, it spent 10 consecutive weeks at number on on the Hot 100. But thats not it. Many artists including the iconic Rihanna, grew afraid. They saw Adele's slayage with a song and knew what she could do with an album, so they all changed their album dates(ALLEGEDLY! I DO NOT KNOW IF THAT IS TRUE< BUT IM JUST TRYING NOT TO SPREAD LIES ON THE INTERNET ABOUT CELEBRITIES). Rihanna pushed her long awaited eight studio album back to 2016 while One Direction and Justin Bieber(Justin making a comeback at the same time as Adele) decided to drop their albums before November 20th. Justin defeated the One Direction album, selling 522,000 album equivalent albums in its debut week, leaving them in the dust at 459,000 copies, making the debut at number 2. Big numbers, right? Unfortunately, as much as Justin made us dance with his new singles, which all took a stay at the Hot 100's top position, not even he was able to stop Adele when she debuted at number one the next week, selling 3.38 copies in its first week, the first album to exceed 3 million copies in its debut week, becoming the highest US first-week sales of all time. She would sell 7 million copies in the US by the year end and 17.4 million worldwide, beating out Taylor Swift's 1989 and Adele's second album to be the best selling worldwide after 21 did with with 18.1 million in 2011 and again with 8.3 million in 2012. It reached 8 million in the US alone by early 2016 and will cross the 9 million mark by late 2016 or early 2017, as it sits with 8.9 million copies. Worldwide, it has 20 million copies, the second highest selling album of the decade, behind 21. Legendary, right? (No. She is low-key legend for now, give it 15-20 years). She has done so much more, but this seem to be enough. This is the question: Has your fave topped this?
